SOUNDVIEW - Police say an emergency medical technician in New York City has died after she and her partner were run over by their own stolen ambulance.

Authorities say two ambulance workers were hit by the vehicle moments after it was taken at Watson Avenue and White Plains Road around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The mayor said the victim's identity was being withheld pending notification of her adult children. He said she was a 44-year-old with 14 years on the job.

"An emergency technician was lost in the line of duty, bravely doing her job," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "They do crucial work, they save lives, but they should not have to face violence."

The partner suffered only minor injuries, de Blasio said.

An off-duty MTA police officer happened to be in the area at the time and intervened "heroically and decisively," the mayor said, while also thanking a number of good Samaritans who also helped apprehend the suspect.

"A lot of heroism was on display today amidst a real tragedy," he added.

Before stopping, authorities said the EMTs were alerted that a man was hanging onto their rear bumper. They stopped and went to investigate, and the suspect jumped into the cab, which began the sequence of events that led to him hitting them and then crashing the ambulance as he tried to flee.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the slain EMT was the eighth member of EMS, and the third woman, to die in the line of duty.

Police said the suspect is a 25-year-old man with a criminal past. They said they were withholding additional information for the time being.

Video posted on Twitter by a bystander shows the ambulance speeding across an intersection with one of its doors open and the body of one of the EMTs being dragged beneath the vehicle. A witness described a similar series of events to News 12.

Another witness who works in a nearby laundromat says the ambulance careened into multiple cars as it sped away.

Police appeared to be on the scene within moments. They say the driver of the stolen ambulance is in custody.

Cellphone video obtained by News 12 shows a man on the ground being handcuffed by authorities.
