NYPD going undercover to stop train phone thefts

THE BRONX - Police are conducting undercover sting operations to crack down on the rash of subway robberies of electronics.

A 13-year-old boy is the latest reported victim of a rash of robberies of Apple products on city subways. Authorities say the alleged thief was caught on camera taking the iPod Touch and headphones from the teen on the 5 train near the Gun Hill Road station last month.

A special NYPD task force is using decoy iPhones to nab the thieves. Earlier this week officers arrested two teens who they say tried to steal the decoy out of the pocket of a backpack on the 6 train.

According to the MTA's latest statistics, crime on the subway is up 27 percent compared to this time last year.
