THE BRONX - A report released by the NYPD shows the murder rate in the Bronx has increased significantly this year.

The report shows murder rates in the 47th Precinct, which includes Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, and Olinville, have increased nearly 50 percent over the past year.

Some residents blame the economy and low police patrols. Other residents say young kids need more community-based events to keep them off the streets.

Community activists say one way to reduce gun violence is to hold gun buyback programs. Earlier this year, the NYPD collected more than 1,200 guns in one day at four locations in the Bronx. One of the locations was at a church in Wakefield.
