NEW YORK - NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly revealed the results of ‘Operation Crew-Cut’ - a yearlong effort to cut back on the number of teens committing violent crimes on their peers.

The commissioner says the effort helped cut the number of youth homicides from 87 last year to 43 this year.

He said that the five-borough operation was aimed at young New York residents between the ages of 13 to 21 who are often involved in violence of because arguments and rivalries over neighborhood areas.

In addition to an added police presence in some hostile areas, Kelly says Operation Crew Cut went beyond monitoring just the streets. Officers also searched social media websites to try to stop violent confrontations before they even started.

Kelly announced that shootings and homicides citywide are down 21 percent after posting record lows in 2012.
