NEW YORK - New York state is enacting some new laws for the new year.

One law taking effect prohibits the sale of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, to New Yorkers under the age of 18. The bill's sponsor says it will protect children from possible dangers because the cigarettes aren't regulated.

Domestic violence victims will also benefit from new legislation. Those who use health insurance to pay for medical and/or mental health services can designate alternative contact information so that they may receive health insurance correspondence in a safe location of their choosing.

The third law could one day benefit Bronx college students. For now, four universities in the state, including NYU and Columbia, are now able to self-insure for students' health insurance needs.
