THE BRONX - A fiery car crash killed an off-duty NYPD officer and injured another near the intersection of City Island Road and Park Drive Wednesday night.

Twenty-seven-year-old Officer Bianca Bennett, the driver, was killed. A 32-year-old male passenger survived.

Bennett, of Queens, worked in the NYPD's 9th Precinct in the East Village. Colleagues there draped the building in bunting in a show of mourning. She had just graduated from police academy in September.

The passenger, a housing officer, lives in the Bronx and works in Manhattan. He is reportedly a sergeant and nine-year veteran of the force.

They were in a Dodge Charger, which rolled over multiple times and burst into flames just before midnight, according to authorities.

Police say two other men, both off-duty officers as well, witnessed the accident as they were leaving the police training facility at Rodman's Neck.

They pulled the survivor free, but could not get Bennett out of the car, police say. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The city's highway collision investigation team says that speed may have played a factor in the crash.

The survivor was taken to Jacobi Medical Center with severe leg trauma and burns to his body.

The two rescuing officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital.
