THE BRONX - News 12 The Bronx has learned that the police officer who helped save a baby's life Tuesday was recently retrained in CPR.

Officer Johnny Castillo was in his patrol car along the Grand Concourse at 196th Street catching speeding drivers as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's new "Vision Zero" plan, when he heard a call come over his radio about an unconscious and unresponsive baby.

The 38-year-old Bronx native and five-year police veteran happened to be right next to the building that the call came from. He went up to the sixth-floor apartment, where he says a 2-month-old was lying unresponsive on the dining room table.

Castillo says he just took an NYPD refresher course on CPR last week. He gave her four light chest compressions and within seconds, she opened her eyes and began breathing again.

EMS arrived moments later and took the baby to Montefiore Medical Center.

Before becoming a police officer, Castillo was an infantry sniper and sergeant in the Army for 10 years. He has two Purple Hearts, among other accolades, but says being a member of the city's finest is where he shines.

News 12 spoke with the family of the baby. They would not go on camera but claim the baby's grandfather also helped bring her back to life before the officer arrived.
