THE BRONX - Elected officials are taking action to improve safety in the area after a stray bullet killed a mother of four in West Farms.

Officials say Cindy Diaz, 48, was fatally shot while walking home from a McDonald's with food for her kids on Boston Road in West Farms last Friday.

Councilman Richie Torres, Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda, members of Community Board Six and the NYPD spoke to the West Farms community Wednesday on enhancing security efforts in the area.

The proposal includes investing $500 million in improving the neighborhood, like the nearby Lambert House, where Diaz lived and was walking back to when she was shot and killed.

Surveillance video shows a suspect leaving the scene after Diaz was shot. Officials believe that another man who was shot was the target.  That man checked himself into a hospital.

“Since 2014, I've allocated about $900,000 for camera surveillance and 350,000 cameras haven't been installed and I'm calling on the city to install those cameras where they are desperately needed,” says Councilman Torres.

Fliers have been posted all over the area to help in the search for Diaz's shooter. A $10,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the shooter’s arrest. No arrests have yet been made in the case.

Councilman Torres told News 12 he is working with the city to get the family relocated as soon as possible.
