THE BRONX - The FDNY and the Department of Buildings are warning renters in the Bronx about the dangers of illegal apartments after a rash of fires in the borough.

Officials from the Department of Buildings visited subway stations today to help residents learn to spot an illegal apartment.

They say that apartments in basements or attics may only be illegal, but they can be dangerous.

Using electricity from an extension cord or locking your room with a padlock can also be a sign of an illegal conversion.
