FORDHAM - Drivers frequently ignore traffic rules near P.S. 246 in Fordham, parents there say, prompting demands for safety improvements at the pedestrian crossing students must use.

They say drivers frequently ignore the stop sign at Creston Avenue and East 193rd Street and do not seem deterred by signs warning of double fines for speeding in the school zone. There are also multiple day care centers in the area.

"They totally disregard that there are kids crossing," says Vivian Ortiz, the PTA president at P.S. 246.

The parents say they've complained to several city agencies to no avail. They are demanding speed bumps and crossing guards in the area.

"We're trying to avoid death, God forbid," Ortiz says. "We're tired of waiting."

The Department of Transportation tells News 12 that it is "working with local stakeholders in the area regarding potential safety enhancements."

Studies on those enhancements will be finalized in the next few weeks, the DOT says.

But Ortiz says she sent a letter demanding changes about a year ago.
