NEW YORK - A series of bills to provide paid leave for workers has passed the state Assembly hurdle.
The legislation would allow employees to take time off and still receive their paychecks for medical emergencies, the birth or adoption of a child, and to take care of an ill relative. It's also intended to provide affordable child care and increase funding for child care subsidies.
One of the bills in the package requires employers to purchase paid family leave insurance for their workers. The cost would be offset by a weekly employee contribution of up to 45 cents from their paychecks.

Another bill expands the definition of a family member to include adoptive children, domestic partners, grandchildren and grandparents, and siblings.
The cost of the new measures will be released in next week's Assembly budget proposal.
