GREAT NECK - Pamela Geller, an outspoken activist known for her anti-jihad viewpoints, spoke before a packed crowd at Chabad of Great Neck this morning.
Geller's group Stop Islamization of America has been classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.
Her speech was originally slated to be delivered at the Great Neck Synagogue, but was canceled. The synagogue claims it was due to security concerns.
Geller has drawn fire in the past for her opposition to the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" in lower Manhattan. More recently, she caused an uproar after posting ads in the New York City subway supporting Israel and condemning jihadism.
Her critics say she makes no distinction between peaceful Muslims and terrorists, but she insists that peaceful Muslims should stand with her group and oppose extremism and terrorists.
Still, not all were happy to welcome Geller to the Island. "It is a sad day for Long Island," said the Muslim Center of LI Bay Shore Mosque in a statement. "Ms. Geller is not an expert on Islam. We would not allow an extremist Muslim to speak at a mosque."
