THE BRONX - Parishioners at St. Joseph's Church are hoping to save their house of worship after its ceiling caved in.

Parishioners say the 140-year-old Bathgate Avenue church has had structural problems in the past. The Archdiocese of New York has been in the process of assessing the cost of repairs, which was estimated between $3 to $4 million before the ceiling collapse.

It comes as the Archdiocese of New York is undergoing a revamping process. Under the plan, some local churches will be closed, while others will be consolidated. Members are concerned their church is on the chopping block because of all the costly repairs.

Parishioners are now trying to raise money on their own and are also petitioning the diocese to save their church.

Over the weekend, parishioners were greeted by a sign informing them that services will now be held in the church's basement due to the collapse in the main part of the church.

The Archdiocese is expected to make a final decision on the future of its churches sometime next month.
