Parks Dept. opens beaches to the public

THE BRONX - The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has officially kicked off the summer season today by opening all city beaches to the public.

Eager beachgoers began arriving at Orchard Beach early this morning, with some of them even venturing into the still frigid water. Those who weren't as brave opted for taking a stroll down the shore or having a beer.

Concession stands were fully stocked with beach gear and toys ahead of the arrival of the holiday weekend crowds.

Orchard Beach will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day.
