Paterson signs no-fault divorce bill

ALBANY - (AP) - Gov. David Paterson has signed a bill thatmakes New York the 50th state to enact some version of no-faultdivorce.

The governor announced the signing on Sunday.

Under current law, New York judges can grant divorce only ongrounds of cruelty, adultery, abandonment or imprisonment. Divorcecan be finalized only one year after a separation agreement isfiled, with both sides consenting.

The new measure requires one spouse to swear under oath that arelationship has broken down for at least six months. Propertydivision, alimony, child custody and support would have to beresolved first.
