THE BRONX - A main portion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare," has officially taken effect.

This means that any American can now get health insurance. Residents can officially start enrolling in the program, although the coverage itself does not start until Jan. 1.

Another law that went into effect today states that Americans who do not get health insurance are subject to a fine.

Many Bronx residents News 12 spoke to did not know that the act went into effect today, but said they are thinking about signing up.

An estimated 7 million Americans will sign up for "Obamacare" in the first registration period.

Residents have until March 31 to sign up.
