Pelham Bay merchants, commuters at odds over bus stop

A commuter controversy has erupted in Pelham Bay over a proposal for a new bus stop. The Department of Transportation (DOT) wants an extended sidewalk

THE BRONX - A commuter controversy has erupted in Pelham Bay over a proposal for a new bus stop.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) wants an extended sidewalk so that Bx5 riders along Westchester Avenue won't have to walk into the street to catch the bus.

While many commuters support the plan, local merchants and residents argue that it would eliminate parking spaces and create more congestion.

The Municipal Services committee of Community Board 10 plans to meet with the DOT this month, but officials say a final decision isn't likely before the end of the year.
