ALBANY - (AP) - State Sen. Bill Perkins says the impendingexpiration of a rent control law guaranteeing affordable housing inNew York City could be a disaster.

The heightened rhetoric by the Democrat came as a NewYork City coalition formed in the Senate and Assembly to pressurethe Senate's Republican majority to extend and strengthen the rentcontrol law. It expires June 15.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver arenegotiating now. The Assembly passed its version of the bill thisweek.

The Senate's Republican majority said it is still consideringthe issue.

If the rent control bill expires, more than 1 million apartmentsin an around New York City could quickly become unaffordable formore than 2 million New Yorkers.
