Police: 1 dead after drunken driver hits tree

THE BRONX - One person is dead after a drunken driver lost control of her vehicle on Orchard Beach Road and slammed into a tree, according to investigators.

Police say they arrived at the scene Thursday night to find three occupants in the vehicle. They say Mariely Gonzalez, 25, was behind the wheel. Gonzalez and another male passenger were taken to Jacobi Medical Center and are listed in stable condition.

Another passenger, Veronica Cintron, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say they determined Gonzalez was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Gonzalez has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving.
