THE BRONX - Police say they have made an arrest in the fatal stabbing of a blind woman in Melrose.
According to authorities, 35-year-old Duvale Stevens was taken into custody in connection with the death of 49-year-old Andrea Hurd. The victim was found in the rear alleyway of 696 Courtlandt Ave. Wednesday afternoon with multiple stab wounds to the torso.
Officials are also investigating the possibility that Hurd was pushed off the roof of the building after being stabbed. The building's superintendent says Hurd's attacker carried her onto the roof, and then tossed her body off the side of the building and into a nearby alley.
Police say Stevens was found inside Hurd's apartment on East 154th Street, and is now facing multiple charges including murder and manslaughter.
Officers say the two were acquaintances, and it's believed that Stevens would stay over at Hurd's apartment from time to time. Neighbors in the area say Hurd was well-known and had a distinctive walk.
Stevens has 11 prior convictions, and Hurd is said to have had a criminal past as well, although police have not identified her past transgressions.
