THE BRONX - ? Police arrested the man who allegedly held two women hostage at a Bronx apartment Friday.

Authorities say Kirkland Smith, 47, refused to let the women leave the apartment on Melrose Avenue and East 158th Street. Following a 5-hour standoff, police were able to negotiate the release of both hostages, who were unharmed.

Smith was allegedly armed with knives. Police say the hostages were Smith's girlfriend and a neighbor. According to authorities, Smith apparently became upset after finding out he was being evicted from his home.
