THE BRONX - The NYPD says officers shot and killed a man while responding to an assault late Sunday night.

Police responded to a 911 call and say they found 32-year-old Satnam Singh assaulting his 61-year-old mother with a frying pan at a 3rd Avenue apartment. Investigators say officers shot Singh after he refused to stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the suspect refused to stop hitting his mother with the frying pan despite repeated appeals. The mother, Kaur Balbar, was taken to Lincoln Hospital where she is in critical condition with several fractures.
