Police fire shot at knife-wielding Soundview man

SOUNDVIEW - Police say a shot was fired yesterday while trying to arrest a knife-wielding Soundview man who had stabbed himself and was not cooperating with police orders.

Police found Luciano Morales, 48, at an apartment on Harrod Avenue after receiving reports of a man with a knife. A stun gun was used after Morales refused to drop his weapon, but police say it had no effect on him. That's when police fired one shot, which missed Morales entirely.

Morales eventually dropped the knife and was taken into custody. He has been charged with menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment.

A friend of Morales says he suffers from drug and alcohol dependency and has mental issues.
