QUEENS - Police are investigating whether human remains discovered along the East River in Queens are that of missing autistic teen Avonte Oquendo.

David Perecman, who represents the Oquendo family, says that the 14-year-old's mom is meeting with police to give them a DNA sample. He confirmed that sneakers and jeans found with the decomposed remains are the same size and make that the boy was wearing when he disappeared on Oct. 4.

The lawyer added during a news conference that the family is remaining hopeful. He says that Oquendo's mom won't believe that the remains are her son until the DNA tests are in.

Authorities say legs, a torso and possible arm were discovered at around 7 p.m. Thursday in the College Point section of the borough. The scene was active all day Friday as authorities searched the water and collected evidence.

Oquendo was last seen running out of his Long Island City school, sparking a massive citywide search that included hundreds of officers and volunteers.

The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
