NEW YORK - One of the two police officers that was caught in a massive fire in Coney Island this past Sunday has died.

Officer Dennis Guerra succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning and the effects of smoke inhalation during the high-rise building fire. He passed away this morning at 6:50 a.m.

Guerra, 38, had been put in a medically induced coma and getting treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, but it was not enough to save the officer.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton extended his condolences to the family. He said in a statement, "Though his loss is devastating to us, and especially to his family, we know Dennis will always live on in his countless acts of generosity in the lives that he protected, and in the city he helped make safer."

Guerra leaves behind his wife, Cathy, and four children, Kathleen, 20; Jonathan, 17; Alyssa, 14; and Zachary, 7.
