THE BRONX - Police are questioning the mother of a Bronx toddler who has been in critical condition at the hospital for the past two days.

Police say Tiara Cohen, 25, is a person of interest after her 3-year-old daughter Heavan was found with bleeding in her brain and burns on her arms at the Claremont Annex city-run homeless shelter.

Officials say Cohen was unable to wake Heavan from her sleep Wednesday.

Sources say she then called 911, claiming her daughter had fallen at the playground a few days earlier.

Heavan was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital a few block away, then transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Since then, Crime Scene Unit detectives have been in and out of the shelter, carrying out evidence bags as they investigate whether it was some type of accident or a case of neglect and mistreatment.

Police say the girl was also malnourished.

Sources say Cohen has a total of five children, who range in age from 1 year old to 7 years old.

Heavan's three older siblings live with their grandmother, and the 1 year old is now in the care of the Administration for Children's Services.

News 12 is told by families who live at the shelter that most people meet with a social worker weekly and they are surprised by the incident.

In a statement, the Administration for Children's Services tells News 12 the allegations are very concerning and it will be actively investigating the circumstances.
