Pollution concerns at Saint Raymond H.S.

THE BRONX - A public meeting tonight at Saint Raymond High School will address results of an environmental probe into soil beneath the school?s athletic field.

The land where the school sits was the former home of a manufactured gas plant site.

According to Con Ed, two preliminary field investigations were conducted to assess soil and groundwater conditions back in 2004 and in early 2006. The findings showed there were manufactured gas plant-related impacts in the forms of contaminated soil and coal tar starting at about three feet beneath the athletic field.

Con Ed stresses the contaminants don't pose an exposure risk to school children engaged in normal activities.
