THE BRONX - A fight to preserve Depression-era murals on the walls of a post office that’s up for sale in the Bronx has been going on for months.

The outside of the building, located at 558 Grand Concourse, has been a landmark for decades, and now the Landmarks Conservancy has agreed to grant the same protection to the inside of the structure.

This means that even though the building is up for sale, the U.S. Postal Service will still be responsible for maintaining the murals, no matter who the new owner is.

Bronx residents say the protection for the paintings is great, but they also want to keep their local post office.

Once sold, the postal service says it plans on relocating the office to an undisclosed spot.
