Power, heat restored after underground fire in Riverdale apts.

THE BRONX - Power and heat was restored to a Riverdale apartment building this morning after an underground fire knocked out a main line.

Tenants in the buildings endured hours of no heat when the fire knocked out power on the customers' secondary cable and gas main. The superintendent of the building turned on the power last night with generators. Heat was restored this morning.

Fire officials say the fire could've been started when salt to prevent icy roads seeped down into the transformer and corroded the wires, causing a gigantic manhole fire.
