RIVERDALE - Power was restored this afternoon to four apartment buildings and several business on Kingsbridge Avenue after a manhole explosion early this morning.

It occurred after one of Con Edison's high voltage feeders exploded around 3 a.m.

Veterinarian Lino Cedeno described it as sounding like a bomb went off. His veterinary office was among a few businesses on the street without power.

Business owners say they've never experienced a power outage on such a huge scale like this before, and because of that, they weren't prepared. Workers from Domino's Pizza brought in a truck to transfer dough to another restaurant to reduce the amount that they would lose to spoilage.

Con Edison was able to restore power at around 2 p.m., and crews will be staying overnight replacing cables that were damaged in the explosion. Officials say an investigation is ongoing as to what caused the explosion, but it's believed to be due to a defective cable.
