THE BRONX - A rent-subsidy program responsible for getting more than 15,000 formerly homeless families their own apartments that was set to be eliminated has been temporarily saved.

The Legal Aid Society got an extension for the Advantage Program benefits at the State Supreme Court. A judge ruled that the city will have to pay the rent for those in the program for the month of April.

The Advantage Program lets eligible working formerly homeless families pay 30-40 percent of their incomes toward the rent, while the city covers the rest of the bill. The arrangement lasts up to two years.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D-N.Y.) budget cut off funding to the program. The city says it will cost nearly $10 million to pay the rents for April.

Officials say that Advantage tenants can apply online for a fair hearing so if the program does get cut off, that they may be eligible for some financial aid.

A decision on whether the city will pay rents for additional months is expected at a court hearing on April 21.
