THE BRONX - City lawmakers want to curb wheel thefts with a new law requiring serial numbers on tires.

Such crimes are becoming more common in the borough, according to officials.

The NYPD's 50th Precinct reported an 11 percent spike in the thefts, which are grand larceny offenses.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera wants to put serial numbers on tires so authorities can track who's buying and selling the stolen goods.

Currently, there's no real method to track tires and rims, according to merchants in the industry.

Cabrera says the proposed law would help drivers recover stolen wheels and put more responsibility on shop owners.
