Prostitute-turned-teacher resigns

CLAREMONT - A former prostitute-turned-Bronx teacher says she is resigning from her position at a Claremont school, instead of fighting to keep her job.

Melissa Petro says she's starting over, even though she never wanted to leave her job as an art teacher at P.S. 70. The decision comes after Petro was suspended from the classroom this fall, three weeks after blogging about her past.

The 30-year-old says she decided to resign instead of going through a termination hearing. She also paired up with attorney Gloria Allred, who says the Department of Education acted on retaliation.

However, Petro says she doesn't plan to file a lawsuit against the Department of Education.
