Puerto Ricans told to get new birth certificates

THE BRONX - A new law recommends that Puerto Ricans who live on the island nation get updated birth certificates after July 1.

Puerto Ricans who live in the United States do not need to get new certificates unless they are planning to use them for government transactions. The law is intended to curb identity theft by making the certificate harder to duplicate.

Community outreach seminars are planned in upcoming months to further explain the law.
