Rally pressures North Central Bronx Hospital to reopen maternity ward in Norwood

Labor and delivery services were expected to be running again after a shutdown last summer. (2/25/14)

THE BRONX - Frustration is mounting in Norwood where community members are waiting for the maternity ward at their local hospital to reopen as promised.

Local leaders held a press conference and rally pressuring the North Central Bronx Hospital to take action after its inpatient labor and delivery unit was shut down last summer by the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Pregnant women and new moms were transferred to the Wakefield Campus of Montefiore Hospital nearly two miles away, which ignited protests from both patients and nurses complaining of excessive wait times and farther travel.

NCBH management agreed to restore the labor services last November, but critics say it's taking too long for that to happen. The state Department of Health has also reportedly threatened to decertify beds if the unit is not running again by April 30.
