Rap mogul, more than 40 others arrested in drug ring bust

Federal officials say they arrested more than 40 people today, including a rap mogul, as they shut down a wholesale drug ring that funneled tons

BRONX - Federal officials say they arrested more than 40 people today, including a rap mogul, as they shut down a wholesale drug ring that funneled tons of marijuana into New York City.

Authorities say the arrests were part of an 18-month investigation into the drug line that has been open for nearly two decades. They say the marijuana was smuggled to New York from Florida and California.

According to officials, the suspects include Kareem Burke, who founded the rap label Roc-A-Fella with Jay-Z and Damon Dash in the 1990s. An employee of High Times magazine also was charged, along with 11 people from the Bronx.

Investigators say they seized more than 360 pounds of marijuana, nearly $2 million and four firearms. They say charges span from conspiracy and intent to distribute to criminal possession of marijuana.

Officials say the investigation is not over and they are still looking for five more suspects.

AP wire services contributed to this story.
