THE BRONX - High schoolers in Tremont are being celebrated for making a difference in the lives of Bronx kids.

The READ Alliance held a completion ceremony at P.S. 279, where it has successfully turned teenagers into tutors, and kindergarteners and first-graders into strong readers.

Organizers say the young students have not only learned to read, but have gained confidence and other necessary skills to excel in the classroom thanks to their older peers.

The READ program is made up of more than 1,000 high school tutors citywide.
