THE BRONX - In just two weeks, the city is ending its rental-assistance program, possibly leaving thousands of families homeless.

The Advantage program allows eligible working families to put 30-40 percent of their income toward rent and the city covers the rest, allowing many families to remain in stable homes rather than on the streets.

However, the governor's latest budget proposal cut off funding to the program. The Department of Homeless Services says without the state funding, it can't keep the program going.

The department says it expects the cuts to force more than 4,000 families back into the shelter system

The program is set to end on April 1.
