Report: MTA may hit city, BX commuters with fare hike

THE BRONX - The MTA is set to decide whether commuters will have to pay more to ride buses and trains in the Bronx and the rest of the city.Next week's budget meeting will focus on how the MTA plans to make up a loss of $800 million. The Daily News reported that a preliminary outline reveals the MTA would raise part of that money with a fare hike. The rest, according to the outline, would come from cost-cutting measures such as making better use of technology and streamlining staff. Some MTA officials have said the fare hike could target unlimited-ride MetroCards. They say riders using the cards pay an average of $1.28 per ride, which is less than what riders paid a decade ago.The report also stated that the MTA is considering raising tolls on bridges and tunnels that it oversees.
