THE BRONX - Registration has opened for public pre-kindergarten, but a new report says the number of applications citywide far exceeds the spots available.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced steps today to alleviate the problem.

"We're doing something about it," Walcott says. "The mayor has committed fully and we've committed fully to do something about it."

The Department of Education says it is spending $20 million to create 4,000 full day pre-kindergarten seats for the 2013-2014 school year.
