THE BRONX - The Bronx County GOP chairman who was arrested for his alleged role in a plot to rig the New York City mayoral election is set to resign this weekend, according to published reports.

Reports indicate that Jay Savino told the Bronx County GOP Committee he will resign and a successor will be selected this weekend. Federal prosecutors allege that Savino took $15,000 in bribes to help state Sen. Malcolm Smith, a Democrat, get a special waiver so he could run for mayor on the Republican ticket.

Savino's attorney says his client is innocent.
