Residents concerned about crumbling tunnel on 174th St. (7/31/13)

THE BRONX - A tunnel on East 174th Street is in bad shape with rusty beams, peeling paint, crumbling walls and dirty water dripping down from it. Some people are worried that the tunnel may be dangerous.

Community activist Sidney Flores has been fighting to get the tunnel fixed since 2005, and says he is tired of waiting. Flores started a petition and so far he says he has 800 signatures from the community.

The Department of Transportation says it is conducting regular maintenance of the tunnel, and crews perform all necessary repairs. The DOT is also currently installing a new fence on the overpass over the tunnel.
