PELHAM BAY - Construction in a section of Pelham Bay is taking up valuable parking spaces and stirring rats, according to residents.

About six construction sites block parking spaces in the neighborhood. The work is being done to install catch basins. Some of the blocked parking spaces are near an American Legion post on Buhre Avenue near Pilgrim Avenue.

One World War II veteran says that as a senior citizen, he shouldn't have to park his car far away to walk to the American Legion post.

Contractors say Con Edison is holding up their work, according to New York City Councilman James Vacca.

"The contractor, who has to put the catch basins in for the city, cannot do his work until Con Edison does their underground cable work," says Vacca. "We're waiting six to eight weeks for Con Edison to do what they have to do."

Triumph Construction has agreed to move some of its materials to free up parking spots, but the company says parking problems will persist until it gets the OK from Con Edison to proceed with the construction work.

Con Edison told News 12 that its portion of the work along with other entities is expected to be completed by next week.
