THE BRONX - Community leaders and residents living near Crotona Park are calling for a major cleanup of the algae-infested and polluted Indian Lake.

In a letter sent to the city parks commissioner this week, state Sen. Ruben Diaz had expressed outrage at the neglect of Indian Lake in comparison to the careful maintenance of the Central Park Lake.

Officials from the Department of Parks and Recreation say they anticipate the lake to be cleared of algae, which blooms in warm water, once the weather gets cooler. They add that a new underwater aeration system is also expected to help control Indian Lake's algae population in the future.
