Residents evacuated from unstable building

THE BRONX - Dozens of Bronx residents were forced out into the cold Monday night when their East 173rd Street building was evacuated because of stability issues.

Authorities evacuated 907 East 173rd St. for more than five hours Monday after inspectors said the building was unsafe because of cracks in the basement walls. The Department of Buildings conducted its own inspections and deemed the building safe to inhabit, but in need of repair.

Residents say construction on a vacant plot next door caused the structural damage, but the DOB says the cracks are evidence of wear and tear.
