Residents: Intersection needs crosswalks

RIVERDALE - Riverdale residents are calling for an increase in safety Saturday at an intersection where a 4-year-old boy was badly hurt earlier in the week.

Residents say the intersection of West 230th Street and Broadway is dangerous and confusing. According to the city's Department of Transportation, there were 74 accidents there in 2009, which does not qualify it as one of the worst in the borough.

Councilman Oliver Koppell says he asked the DOT to execute a safety improvement study in November. The agency has not yet responded, Koppell says.

Residents say they hope the DOT will at least add crosswalks to the area.
