THE BRONX - Baychester residents joined a city councilman to protest a juvenile detention center in their neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The facility is part of the state Close to Home program, which lets convicted juvenile delinquents stay close to home so families can be involved in their rehabilitation. Construction is almost completed, according to Councilman Andy King.

King led a protest with residents, saying the Administration for Children's Services cannot have that type of facility in a residentially zoned area.

Residents say they fear the residential rehabilitation center will endanger children in the neighborhood and lower their quality of life.

ACS says it will continue to work with officials and community members to address their concerns.

A Department of Buildings spokesman says the plans for the project were reviewed and found to be in compliance with city construction and zoning rules.
