CITY ISLAND - Hundreds of City Island residents gathered in a town hall forum last night to voice their opinions over the proposed closure of a local firehouse. Residents, community leaders and elected officials packed Lido's Catering Hall to help save Ladder 53, the island's only fire company. The forum was hosted by Councilman James Vacca (D-13th District). Ladder 53 is one of 20 fire companies slated to close as part of next year's FDNY budget cuts. This marks the third time the firehouse has been at risk of shutting its doors. "We are in trouble," Councilman Vacca said. "This is the third year. And I have to tell you tonight, if there is a fourth year and a fifth year, we will be out every time this thing happens to us again." All public statements from last night's meeting are expected to be sent to FDNY Headquarters, as well as City Hall, later this week.Fight to keep City Island fire company heats up
