THE BRONX - Many straphangers are voicing their discontent over intercoms they say can?t replace station agents on the subway.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority had intercoms installed at many stations. The proposed layoffs of 450 station agents would mean that riders would have to rely on the intercoms for all their needs.

Many riders said they were unaware of the intercoms and unable to use them. Some added the nondescript-looking boxes were hard to find and broke easily.

The MTA plans to put signs directing people to the location of intercoms.
