THE BRONX - Community Board 8 is ramping up its efforts to put the brakes on a development project that would house senior citizens and the mentally ill in one building.

Members of the Broadway Community Alliance have collected more than 700 signatures from residents who are against the Van Cortlandt Green proposal at 6469 Broadway. Neighbors say the block already has a transitional center and senior housing, and they don't want another similar facility moving in.

SelfHelp LLC and Comunilife teamed up for the project. In a statement, the organizations said in part, "We are confident that the building will provide a healthy, productive environment for the seniors and other vulnerable individuals who will call this their home."

The community board says it plans to meet with Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and is questioning whether the 12-story building complies with zoning regulations.
